meghan, martin l. king & queens

a reflection on meghan markle, martin luther king & the pervasiveness of empire

the latest developments in the #megxit conversation have caused me to do more than just sip english tea. news of meghan and harry’s curious exit from their royal assignment has stirred me to question what is at stake when one tips the scales of an empire.

if we follow history, when an agitator named king wished to turn the hierarchy of capitalism on its head - he was branded “the most dangerous negro” in america and ended up being assassinated and sent to an early grave.

and, now. there’s meghan. a duchess more fit to be queen than the people have ever seen, yet most of the uk is in a tizzy that she doesn’t want to be sent to an early grave. rest in peace, diana.

what, then, do we say to these things?

to meghan and martin king and queens.

“and, now. there's meghan. a duchess more fit to be queen than the people have ever seen, yet most of the uk is in a tizzy that she doesn't want to be sent to an early grave.”

i say that not much has changed. that empires still kill perceived threats to its social order.

that the mascot version of king that is worshipped is not who he truly was. rest in power, #mlk.

that the version of royalty coursing through meghan’s veins means more to me than an hrh title.

that the structures that enslaved my ancestors will be - are being - burned down bit by bit.

that new worlds, of freedom, of revolution, of a patriotism that invites the least of these, truly do exist but are up to us to build up. bit by bit.

it’s why some of us refuse to sit between pews filled to the brim with hopeful hearts and hollow words.

it’s why some of us pray with our feet, protest injustice, insist that there is something else besides the status quo.

it’s why some of us resist systems of evil whenever and however we can.

with our hair styles repping our crowns. side hustles where we can be queens. never bowing to cold #windsor moving to the left of sidewalks over-run by gentrifieds looking for kentucky fried.

it’s why i write. to foresee a world beyond. a world where meghan and martin have more in common than kings and queens give a damn about us.
